BOWEN TECHNIQUE - WHAT IS IT?
The Bowen Technique is a complimentary therapy
designed by the late Tom Bowen of Geelong, Australia. Tom Bowen
was a gifted and intuitive healer, with no formal training in therapy
work. By 1975 he was seeing a remarkable 13,000 patients a year,
as documented by the Victoria State Government. The first bowen
seminar's were taught in Australia in 1987.
It is a type of bodywork which is very subtle and
only uses small movements over the muscles and connective tissue
to stimulate a reaction of the body. There are many theories as
to how the bowen technique works but to be honest it is very difficult
to put into words. What is known is that the practitioner will stimulate
muscles, tendons, nerves and fascia.
An excellent book which looks at the biologic mechanisms of action
is one called (Clinician's Complete Reference to Complementary &
Alternative Medicine, ISBN 0-323-00755-4)
The body is stimulated at specific points, (many
along the spine, close to nerve endings), usually in pairs of movements
(to create body balance) using minimal finger pressure. There is
time left in between each set of movements (whereby the practitioner
will commonly leave the client alone in the therapy room) before
he/she will return to continue further work.
The client lay's on a treatment couch or a suitable
comfortable surface, and the moves are performed often through light
clothing. The treatment time can vary due to the individual body
responses however most practitioners allow 45mins - 1hour for a
treatment.
The technique is useful for many conditions which
are covered in another section. It should be noted that the therapy
can be used on all ages of the population (including babies) due
to it's gentle application.
